The Top Five Reasons You Need AIOps

The demands of today’s digital economy—coupled with the increasing complexity of modern application architectures—have made the role of IT operations (ITOps) simultaneously more vital and more challenging. To successfully fulfill their increasingly strategic imperatives, the adoption of artificial intelligence for IT operations (AIOps) is emerging as a top requirement. (To learn more about AIOps, be sure to see our “What is AIOps” blog post.) Here’s how one analyst defined AIOps:

“Put simply, AIOps is the application of machine learning (ML) and data science to IT operations problems. AIOps platforms combine big data and ML functionality to enhance and partially replace all primary IT operations functions, including availability and performance monitoring, event correlation and analysis, and IT service management and automation. AIOps platforms consume and analyze the ever-increasing volume, variety and velocity of data generated by IT and present it in a useful way.”1

In a recent survey of more than 300 IT professionals, we found that respondents overwhelmingly believe AIOps is the future of IT operations, with 83% of organizations moving to implement AIOps, and 25% already having gone into deployment.2

With this new approach to IT operations gaining such significant momentum, we identified the top reasons you should consider adopting AIOps for your organization.

Reason #1: Proliferation of Monitoring Tools Makes Analytics Challenging

Today’s dynamic, distributed, and microservice-style architectures continue to introduce more complexity and present new monitoring challenges. For example, the same survey found that more than 50% of respondents indicated cloud and mobile devices make observability challenging. The survey also indicated that more than half of companies are using six or more monitoring tools.3

The use of these disparate monitoring tools makes it extremely difficult to obtain end-to-end visibility across the entire ecosystem that underpins a given business service or application. These point tools can’t support the correlation and analysis of multiple application performance metrics, which makes it nearly impossible for teams to solve complex, emerging problems before they have an impact on the end-user experience.

Reason #2: The Sheer Volume of Alerts Is Becoming Unmanageable

With thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of monthly alerts that need to be managed, coupled with dwindling resources, it’s no wonder the use of AI and machine learning is becoming a necessity. AIOps can help reduce the impact of these issues by decreasing downtime, IT monitoring tool sprawl, and time spent analyzing alerts.

The survey reveals that 94% of ITOps professionals said they need analytics solutions to correlate all the information generated. However, only 46% actually have those capabilities in place today.4 Moving forward, the combination of analytics and AI that AIOps provides will be indispensable for these teams, enabling them to process massive volumes of information and make it actionable.

Reason #3: Delivering Superior User Experiences Requires Predictive Analytics

Today, every business is one poor user experience away from a lost customer. Given this, the premium that businesses place on ensuring a superior customer experience is not surprising.

Collecting data from disparate sources is the first step in enabling AIOps, and this data must be correlated in order to be effectively analyzed. Having these end-to-end insights across the entire application stack, from back-end infrastructure to customer behavior and performance, will help you to ensure the optimal customer experience, every time.

AIOps makes complex automated decisions by collecting and analyzing data. By leveraging this data, these platforms can predict probable future events that may affect availability and performance and even proactively remediate them before they become an issue. These predictive analytics go beyond what is possible by humans alone and help make a compelling case for adopting AIOps.

Reason #4: The Expected Benefits of AIOps are Enormous

99% of IT professionals believe AIOps could deliver numerous benefits to their organizations. Faster issue resolution is the top-rated benefit, with almost three-quarters of respondents citing that as an expected area of improvement. Automatic anomaly detection and the ability to pinpoint root causes were the next two examples, receiving 69% and 68% responses respectively. It’s also clear that, with these capabilities, teams anticipate that they’ll be able to boost uptime (64%), predict outages (60%), and improve customer experience (47%).5

Reason #5: The Future of IT Operations is AIOps

As monitoring and data analytics challenges mount, AIOps will play a key role in enabling the critical innovations that deliver new efficiencies for ITOps teams. A total of 80% of respondents indicated that intelligent automation is in their roadmap, with more than a quarter already having started using these capabilities. Further, 93% of IT professionals surveyed indicated that AIOps is needed to improve reliability, provide end-to-end observability, and enable automation.6

Business and IT leaders who want their organizations to not only survive but thrive in today’s digital economy must consider the use of AI in IT operations. Now is the time to start assessing and implementing AIOps-powered solutions to deliver the superior user experiences your customers have come to expect.

    Conclusion

To help their businesses adapt and thrive in the digital economy, it will be imperative for ITOps teams to deliver optimized service levels, while maximizing operational efficiency and agility. Toward this end, AIOps platforms will represent an increasingly strategic asset. To learn more, be sure to review the report:
